“this collection of synth pieces from the former Emeralds member is a staggeringly beautiful career highlight” – PITCHFORK on “Annual Flowers In Color”
“In many ways it resembles the nostalgic sensations of early Boards of Canada, while still brandishing Elliott’s unmistakable sound” – INVERTED AUDIO on “Gold Fiction Loop Garden”
Imaginary Softwoods is a solo ambient/drone project created by John Elliott, an American electronic musician currently residing in Cleveland, Ohio. Elliott was a founding member of drone legends Emeralds, and has also been involved in a number of collaborations including Mist (with Sam Goldberg), and Organic Dial (formerly Outer Space w/Andrew Veres). Elliott also curated the cutting edge Spectrum Spools imprint, a subsidiary of Peter Rehbergs Editions Mego. He now publishes his music through his own Mineral Disk imprint.
Though primarily known as a collaborator, Imaginary Softwoods is the lone solo endeavor that remains the main focus of his current output. Imaginary Softwoods is known for combining elements of outsider new-age, ambient, and kosmische music with an array of traditional and modular synthesizers, field recordings and tape loops. With only a handful of full-length albums widely distributed along with scarce, micro-edition handmade cassette releases, Imaginary Softwoods remains a somewhat elusive project emanating a singular mysterious and metaphysical ambiance.
In 2023 Field Records will release his new album “The Notional Pastures Of imaginary Softwoods”.
